In the past, for welsh seaside communities that traded with England, the word “Parrog” was a word similar to "paddock" which acquired the meaning of "a flat place for unloading ships". Originally created to serve as a port, Newport is today a little safe haven for small vessel moorings, a yacht club and quaint little places to eat by the seafront. From the parrog it is also possible to reach the beach of Newport Sands, opposite, by wading across the estuary of the river Nevern which flows by to reach the sea through this little harbour.
