This drawing of an historical building, executed in pencil graphite
by Welsh based artist Vladislas, is offered as a Fine Art LIMITED EDITION
reproduction by Vlad-Art, featuring the Old Market Hall in Shrewsbury,
Shropshire, England. This drawing shows with incredibly great details this Elizabethan
building situated in the town centre of the county town of Shropshire. A previous Market House
was in
existence on the same site in the 1260s, used by
wool merchants as a place to sell their fleeces but this building was
actually demolished to make way for the Market Hall of today: The
large upper room was originally used by the Shrewsbury Drapers Company to sell
Welsh cloth but was later used as the town's magistrates court until 1995 while
the lower floor was used by farmers to sell their corn.
The Old Market Hall was erected in less than four months in 1596. It bears the Royal Coat of Arms of Queen Elizabeth I with the English lion and the Welsh dragon as supporters. This outstanding structure is made of Grinshill stone from . It is made of Triassic sandstone which has been quarried at Grinshill, a small village and civil parish in Shropshire, since at least the twelfth century and was described as the pre-eminent building stone of Shropshire. It has been used most notably to make the lintels and door surround of Number 10 Downing Street, the headquarters of the Government of the United Kingdom.
