This evocative seascape of Cwm yr Eglwys is presented by Vlad-Art from an original painting created in oil by Welsh based artist Vladislas.

Cwm-yr-Eglwys,  meaning in English “ Valley of the Church”, is a hamlet in a quaint little cove with a beach sheltered from prevailing winds, on the edge of the Dinas Head peninsula,  between Fishguard and Newport in  Pembrokeshire, southwest Wales.

There are 27 homes with a full time population of around 10 people.  It’s closest neighbour is Pwllgwaelod, a cove on the opposite side of the peninsula that can be reached by a 1mile long level and direct path through the wooded walkway that almost divides Dinas Head from the mainland.

In this little inlet still stands the remains a pre-Norman church of St. Brynach which suffered storm damage in 1850 and 1851 when it was destroyed by the sea.  The church footings were left hanging over a void and the graveyard was severely damaged too.  Another great storm in October 1859 came to remove the church roof and destroyed the walls. The building was therefore abandoned.

In 1880, the enduring ruins were pulled down from the west entrance wall and a new sea wall was built to protect what was left of the cove. In 1979, another storm caused the sea wall to be damaged but it was repaired and the gravestones were rearranged too. Today this stone elevation of the church is all that stands as a memorial and Cwm yr Eglwys is now a popular tourist attraction and a pleasant public space with a wooden bench looking out to sea for all the weary cliff walkers who have ventured around the coast path.
